In this story, we are introduced to four special people as they attempt to navigate their friendships and feelings. Alice is a hardworking dancer who meets Dan, a storyteller and writer. They really like each other when they meet, and begin spending a lot of time together.
Larry is Anna's friend. He knows Anna, and he cares for her. But when he learns Anna and Dan are talking in a way that makes him sad, he gets upset. He doesn’t know how to handle his feelings.
The story demonstrates that friends can sometimes struggle with intense emotions that are difficult to comprehend. Sometimes friends can cause each other great joy, and sometimes they can cause each other great sadness. When one feels very intensely, one doesn’t always know what to do.
There’s lots of talking between characters in this story. (They text on phones and computers, trying to sort out who likes who.) But sometimes these messages just complicate things rather than help.
The characters in the story feel differently. Alice is excited to see Dan. Dan has mixed feelings about Anna. to Anna, Different people tugging Anna in different directions, Larry is hurt and anxious about what is happening.
When friends are feeling a lot of feelings, it might feel very confusing to figure out how to help. Are they supposed to share their feelings? Should they keep quiet? Would they do what they could to make things right?
In the end, we find out that friendships are complicated. People feel tons of feelings, and sometimes we just don't know how to feel. What really counts is going to be compassionate and understanding to one another during the toughest of times.
